The Secret of Calculated Enthusiasm
By Michael Masterson

When I began consulting with my current largest client, I was surprised to discover that some of the marketing people had a habit of making condescending remarks about their customers.

These were bright people who cared about quality. But somewhere along the line, they had decided it was okay to demean the customer in absentia. This was a great company in many ways. But I knew it was doomed if this attitude was allowed to persist.

I spoke to the CEO about it. He himself never said a bad word about anyone, so I knew it couldn't be coming from him. At first, he thought I was overreacting. "They are probably blowing off steam," he said. "I'm sure they don't mean it."

"They may not mean it," I replied. "But if they keep talking that way their subordinates will imitate them. And before long, you will have a business that treats its customers badly."

"I don't want that," he admitted.

"Well then, you have to do something about it. And fast."

What I suggested was a campaign I called "Calculated Enthusiasm" -- convincing his already jaded senior staff to consciously and conspicuously pretend to be enthusiastic about their customers, even if they weren't.

I began by explaining to them that cynicism is destructive. I gave them examples of how a cynical attitude had damaged a company I had worked for in the past.

They accepted my statement in theory. But they didn't think they were being cynical. "We're just being funny," they said.

"But demeaning your customers is not funny," I said. It is damaging to them because it will eventually manifest itself in your customer service. And when that happens, it will be damaging to you because they will take their business elsewhere."

Eventually, they agreed to give Calculated Enthusiasm a try.

Speaking "positively" about their customers felt awkward at first, but soon it became second nature. And the effect on their subordinates was immediate and obvious. Discussions about new products and customer problems were imbued with positive energy. New ideas were suggested to improve just about everything. Morale improved.

If you want success in the long run... and if you want to be able to look yourself in the mirror every morning... love your customer. Start by swearing off cynicism. Ban the condescending jokes. Stop using derogatory language.

Then start to think about what your job is... what it really is. And maybe it will dawn on you that selling is -- or can be -- a loving act.

Spinning Your Wheels With Your Internet Business?

80 percent of what most people do is a total waste of time. It's the other 20 percent that really gets the job done.

Brian Edmondson, Director of the Internet Money Club, realized that this holds true for building and launching online businesses. 80 percent of what most people think is really important when it comes to making money online actually gets you nowhere.

That's why, in the IMC, we make the top 20 percent our primary focus.

And we go even further. Brian knows that even within that top 20 percent, not all money-making activities are created equal. So he has boiled down the top 20 percent to the top 5 percent!

Find out what that kind of "laser focus" can do for you...

Use Conversional Copy for the Best Internet Marketing Results
By Bob Bly

A public radio station in my area, featuring eclectic rock and pop, sent me a fundraising letter. It began: "Dear Neighbor, I know you are a savvy media consumer."

Now I don't know about you, but if you ask me why I listen to the radio, I would not say because I am a savvy media consumer. I'd say, "I like music."

Here's the way I'd rewrite that lead:

"Dear Fellow Music Lover: Do you ever wish, when you turn on the radio, that they'd play OUR
music?"

While my rewrite hasn't been tested against the original, I believe it's an improvement. For two reasons.

First, it talks about something the reader cares about: hearing music they like when they turn on the radio.

Second, it establishes a bond between the reader and the writer of the letter based on a common interest. That's why I said "our" music instead of "your" music.

We copywriters are taught to write like that -- in a conversational, intimate "voice." What that means is to write the way our prospectstalk.

"You should talk as if you're having coffee with the reader and use her language," says copywriter Susanna K. Hutcheson. "Many copywriters, and just about all people who write their own copy, don't understand the concept of writing in the language of the reader. It's truly an art."

Some argue that jargon is appropriate when writing to specialists because that's the way they talk. But don't confuse jargon with technical terms. Specialists may use jargon when they write, but not when they talk.

Technical terms are words used by specialists that communicate concepts more concisely than ordinary terms. Example: "operating system" to describe the software that controls the basic operations of a computer.

Jargon, on the other hand, can be more complex than the idea it serves to communicate.

Example: I worked for a company that made industrial equipment. In one of our products, a door opened at the bottom of a silo, allowing powder to fall into a dump truck. Our chief engineer insisted that we replace "dumped" with "gravimetrically conveyed" in our copy.

For a client, I wrote that the dental brace they manufactured helped keep loose teeth in place. The product manager rewrote "keep loose teeth in place" to "stabilize mobile dentition." This is like calling the seashore an "ocean-land interface."

Mark Twain said, "I never write metropolis when I get paid the same amount of money to write the word city." But is there an exception to the rule of writing the way people talk? Is there any situation where you would deliberately use language more complex than the idea it serves to communicate?

Yes. The one time when you might consider it is when you want to set your product above the ordinary.

Take a look at a Mont Blanc catalog. They don't describe their products as pens. They sell "writing instruments." Why? Because Mont Blanc pens start at about $100. And while that's too much to pay for a pen, it's not too much to pay for a "writing instrument."

The goal of direct-response copywriting is not to produce perfect prose or great writing. It is to persuade the consumer to buy the product. And the copywriter should do whatever it takes to achieve that goal, whether or not writing purists approve.

For instance, grammarians dislike the phrase "free gift." They complain that "free" is inherent in the definition of gift. After all, what gift isn't free? But as my colleague Herschell Gordon Lewis points out, "free gift" works because "each word reinforces the other."

I remember hearing about a mailer who actually split-test "free gift" vs. "gift." Not only did "free gift" win handily, a number of recipients of the "gift" letter responded by asking whether the gift was indeed free.

Which reminds me of what Ralph Waldo Emerson once said: "It is not enough to write so you can be understood. You must write so clearly that you cannot be misunderstood."

P.S. The ability to write conversational copy is just one of the many skills you need to build your Internet business. Search engine optimization, e-mail list building, joint ventures, social media... you'll learn it all in the Internet Money Club. It's the premier Internet business building coaching program. China Moves Up the Food Chain

By Bob Irish
Investment Director, Investor's Daily Edge

As countries become more industrialized, their citizens consume more protein. Rising incomes enable consumers to move up the food chain and eat more grain-intensive foodstuffs, like milk, meat, and eggs. And that, says Dylan Grice, an analyst at Societe Generale, is exactly what we're seeing in China.

The Chinese, on average, eat 117 pounds of meat per person per year. That's up from just 55 pounds per person in 1995. Americans consume 210 pounds per capita per year.

It takes 16 pounds of grain to produce one pound of beef. So to supply China with enough meat for them to eat the same amount as we do would require an increase in worldwide grain production of 277 million tons! And the Chinese aren't the only ones eating more protein. It's happening all over the developing world.

That's one of the reasons grain supplies are tight. And grain prices are already high and vulnerable to a correction.

We'll be keeping readers of our new Sound Profits advisory posted on when it makes sense to buy grain or a grain-based ETF. Meanwhile, it's a cinch that with prices high, farmers everywhere will be trying to grow more grain.

That's where the investment opportunity is right now says Steve McDonald, a contributor to Sound Profits. Big profits lie ahead for companies that provide the wherewithal to do just that, especially fertilizer companies. (Steve's latest fertilizer pick is up 14 percent since he since he recommended it in June.)

Powerful long-term trends are what make you money. We'll be talking more about the demand for grain and the best way to play it in Sound Profits, which debuts next month.

"Planting Seeds" in Someone's Mind Pays Off -- Sometimes Big Time
By Michael Masterson

Want to get someone to do something he doesn't want to do? It's amazingly easy. All you have to do is plant a seed and wait for it to sprout.

This is a phenomenally powerful business secret I learned from JSN when I worked with him many years ago. He used it to acquire many very profitable information products.

Here's how he did it:

When he saw a product he liked, he'd call up the owner and ask to buy it. Most times, the owner would refuse. Then JSN would give the owner one good reason he should consider selling. That didn't usually change the owner's mind. But, JSN told me, the seed was planted.

At first, I doubted that much would come of this approach. But after watching him do it for a while, the results became obvious. Publisher after publisher -- for one reason or another -- brought him products to buy. Some of them were very good. Some of them were offered to him before the rest of the market heard about them, so he had a strategic advantage when it came to bidding for them. And some came only to him. He named his price and took them.

"Experts often possess more data than judgment."

How to Make Tough Decisions Easy
By Michael Masterson

Several years ago, a professor of philosophy introduced me to an idea I have used to clarify my thinking and make the right business decisions time and again. You may find it as useful as I do.

We were having lunch, and the conversation turned to Nietzsche, the German philosopher and poet. I knew a little bit about Nietzsche. I knew he was anti-religion (as we say today) and believed man could perfect himself by self-assertion -- an idea that made its way into the rhetoric of the Third Reich.

The professor told me that Nietzsche had many other interests, including classical philology, art, antiquity, and music. But it was what Nietzsche had said about "information" that most intrigued me. According to the professor, he predicted that, with the advent of information technology in the 21st century, secondary knowledge (what we learn from studies, books, newspaper accounts, etc.) would eventually replace experience as the basis of judgment.

I had never given much thought to the distinction between primary and secondary and knowledge. Many of the opinions I held -- on topics ranging from global warming to national politics -- were based on what I had read, not experienced firsthand.

Since then, I have paid closer attention to the origins of my ideas and the ideas of others. And I am convinced that Nietzsche was right. In fact, I think it's fair to say that his prediction has already come true.

And this presents both a danger and an opportunity.

What's Wrong With the Way People Think Today

These days, most people, most of the time, would rather act on the basis of theoretical knowledge (Nietzsche called it "wissen") than on what they know from personal experience. (Nietzsche called it "erfahrung.")

Let me give you an example...

I know from experience that when I invest in a business I know little or nothing about, I lose money. Yet I can talk myself into making such an investment if I see a business plan that has amazingly good numbers, superb credentials, and solid testimonials. I put aside the knowledge that is in my bones in favor of the facts and figures in my head.

Another example...

We know from experience that we can't trust politicians to do what they say. Yet every election year, we vote for the man whose speeches makes the most "sense" to us.

There is so much information to deal with. Every day, we get more. And often it confirms our own experiences. We hear statistics about the growth of the Internet -- and we know 10 people who have recently gone online.

But sometimes the facts contradict our experience. We are told that the economy is tanking and companies are folding left and right. But many of the businesses I know are doing just fine.

When secondary information contradicts our personal experience, we have trained ourselves to ignore our experience. "I must have incomplete knowledge of this," we tell ourselves. "My experience is obviously not typical."

Instead of using our experience to judge the validity of facts and figures (which, let's be honest, can be rigged to "say" pretty much anything), we judge the validity of our own experience by them.

It's really remarkable. We know how easy it is to manufacture information. And we also know that some people will do almost anything to have their way. Yet many of us never make the connection between the corruptibility of man and the corruptibility of facts.

Blunders of the Past Can Save You Money in the Future

When I think about bad decisions I've made in business, it is most often a case of my having favored facts over experience.

Case in point: A former business partner and I spent a year attempting to succeed with a publication aimed at new mothers. We were convinced -- by the numbers we had come up with -- that it was going to be a huge winner for us. The fact that neither of us had any experience in the industry didn't phase us. The result: We were a quarter of a million in the red before we gave up.

Another example: All the direct-mail publishers I know have given advertisers free access to their lists in exchange for a split of the advertisers' net profits. The publishers waive their advertising fees when they see the amazing numbers "other publishers" have experienced "using this very same ad." The result: a much smaller response than predicted by the numbers. (The publishers get little or nothing. But the advertisers have some new leads they didn't have to pay for.)

What You Can Do to Make Smart Decisions Most of the Time

I'm not saying you should ignore secondary knowledge. Sometimes you just have to make decisions without the benefit of experience. But when it comes to making important personal or financial decisions -- the kind that can cost you plenty if you're wrong -- trust your bones.

Here's something you can do the next time you are overwhelmed by the thought of making an important decision.

Take a piece of paper and fold it in half vertically. On one side, put down everything you know from experience. On the other side, put down the facts and figures you've been told. Then do this: Tear the page in half (vertically) and toss all those facts and figures in the garbage. You'll then have everything you need to know to make the right decision.

Will you ever miss out on a great opportunity? Possibly. But my experience tells me you'll go broke a hundred times before you succeed at something you have no experience in.

P.S. How do you get business-building experience... if you've only worked for other people? There is no better way than by starting and growing an online business. The cost of entry is super-low, so you won't risk losing a bunch of start-up capital. With ETR's recently launched Internet Money Club, Class of 2010, you'll find out firsthand what it takes to be a success. You'll learn from your mistakes -- and triumphs. How to Avoid Becoming a Fat Thin Person
By Michael Masterson

Whether you want to lose weight or just tone up, your objective should be the same... to lose fat without sacrificing muscle.

Otherwise, you'll end up as a fat thin person.

To burn fat without losing muscle, base your meals on a healthy source of protein. And add resistance exercise to your workout routine. Recent research published in the Journal of Nutrition confirms this common-sense approach.

Researchers at the University of Illinois divided 48 obese women into two groups. One group was put on a high-protein diet. The other group consumed more carbohydrates. (Both diets had the same number of calories.) Both groups walked several times a week. But the high-protein group added two sessions of resistance exercise.

When the study concluded, the high-protein group had lost an average of 22 pounds -- almost all of it from fat. The women on the high-carb diet lost 15 pounds, and more than two pounds of it -- 15 percent -- was from muscle.

Dr. Donald Layman, the author of the study, summed it up this way: "Both diets work because, when you restrict calories, you lose weight. But the people on the higher-protein diet lost more weight. There's an additive, interactive effect when a protein-rich diet is combined with exercise. The two work together to correct body composition; dieters lose more weight, and they lose fat, not muscle."

For the past year or so, my eating routine has been:

7:30 a.m. - two eggs, one piece of whole wheat toast, coffee
11:30 - protein bar
2:30 - protein shake
5:30 - espresso and one piece of dark chocolate
8:00 - protein (fish or grass-fed beef or organic chicken) and organic vegetables

This diet keeps me lean and satisfied.

Is Your Fear of Failure Keeping You From Being as Rich as You Could Be?
By Michael Masterson

Most people refuse to set goals. I don't know why. Maybe it seems daunting. Or threatening. Or just silly. But it works.

If you set wealth goals, you will increase your wealth. But don't just pull a number out of the air. Be realistic.

Start with your income. If you are earning $50,000 a year now, make a decision to earn $60,000 or $70,000 next year. I don't believe in over-reaching. Especially in the beginning. You have to learn how to reach modest goals first. Once you have done that, you can crank up your internal moneymaking machine.

But income is only part of the program. You have to set net-worth goals too.

Figure out what your net worth is today. (Add up all your assets, and then subtract everything you owe.) Then make a commitment to increase your net worth by a modest percentage every week. To do that, you will need to set two additional goals. You will have to spend less than you are spending now and save more.

Becoming wealthy is not much different from becoming physically fit. You start from where you are and train your muscles (in this case, the wealth-building muscles in your brain) to perform better as time goes on. With each small achievement, you gain confidence and skill. Before you know it, you're an automatic wealth-builder.

Teach Your Employees to Mentor One Another
By Michael Masterson

If you spend a lot of time training your employees, you may be making a big mistake. Your primary job is to build your business. That includes teaching people what you know. But if you devote too much time to it, your business will suffer.

Here's a better way: Teach your best employees what you know. And then teach them how to teach it to new employees.

This not only frees up your valuable time, it establishes an automatic mentoring system. And that provides additional benefits:

  • Every new employee has someone with experience to turn to for advice.
  • The mentor feels responsible for the new employee's performance -- and they both learn that responsibility is best when shared.
  • For a while at least, a separate pair of eyes will be carefully reviewing the work of every new employee. This should result in fewer mistakes that will need to be fixed later.
  • The mentor will probably rise to a higher level of commitment and dedication to the business. He'll take himself and his job more seriously.

Until then, let me leave you with one of our program members Julie Broad from Canada...

"$2,000 The Second Month!"

"I left a six figure salary job to pursue the online business I created after joining this program and applying its money-making formula... As a result of following step-by-step guidance I've been able to:

  • Create and maintain a profitable website without any programming knowledge at all - and I've never had to hire anyone with programming expertise to help me
  • Earn $500 my first month, $2,000 the second month and $5,000 my third month. I'm confident I will earn $10,000 or more next month...
  • Expand my tiny list of 100 family and friends into an email list of nearly 2000 people - that is growing every day (and most of those names were from FREE sources!)"

Find out how, in just 30 days, you could do the same as Julie by clicking here now...

What's behind our mystery project? Your freedom...

Dear Early to Rise Reader,

Yesterday, I told you we were working on a project that was going to finally give you real hope and help make your dreams reality...

Well, I want to start off by saying that you can stop wondering if you missed the online business money train. You can put away your doubts that the golden nuggets of opportunity are gone or out of your reach.

Because today, I'm handing you back your dreams and your hopes.

You'll get it all... and without even the slightest hint of risk.

How in the world can I do that?

Actually, the real question is... "How fast can I do that?" and "How much money can you make?"

30 days - that's how fast.

If you sign up for our new program, then in just 30 days, I guarantee that you'll have a fully blown, professional, online business up and running.

Not wishing for an online business... or hoping you had one... or wondering if the day will ever come when you've got an online business automatically bringing you in cash.

I'm talking fully operational.

We start on January first. You come to the table with nothing but a desire to have an online business. And before the sun sets on the last day of the month, you will have your very own online business up and running.

Guaranteed.

If I can't deliver on that promise, then you owe nothing.

I know it sounds insane and almost fantastic to believe.

But, you can't help wonder what life would be like if you had a solid money-making online business, right?

So many people are living a lifestyle today that others only dream about. And why do so many of them get to enjoy this freedom and income? Because they have successful online businesses.

An online business works 24/7. It never sleeps. It never shuts down. It can be an automated cash machine that pumps money into your bank account morning, noon and night.

You set it up once and let it run.

How much can you make? I have no idea... and neither do you.

  • In 1994, Jeff Bezos started Amazon.com out of his garage... today the company does over $10 billion in sales.
  • In 1996 Larry Page and Sergey Brin were just students at Stanford working on their PhD. Their final project turned into Google, who did over $21 billion in 2008.

Of course those are two rather extreme examples, but for every Bezos, Page and Brin there are tens of thousands of online entrepreneurs that happily go on their way making $100,000 or more in automatic income.

But, no matter where you want to be, it all begins with owning an online business that is bringing in money.

And that is exactly what our new program is designed to do. It takes you from where you are today... wherever that is... and before the end of January 2010, it guarantees that you'll have a fully operational online business up and running.

It would be an incredible thing if that was all our new program did... but it's not.

There is much more to the equation, as you'll soon see.

For now, if you are at all curious about how we can make this kind of exciting promise, then click on this link now to get all the details.

For years and years, you've been hoping for a "lucky break", a shot at grabbing your piece of the internet pie.

Well, here it is. Not only is it here, but it is going to be faster and easier than you ever imagined... and require zero risk on your side.

We've worked it all out for you.

But, fair warning... even as you read this, dozens of people have already signed up and decided they were sick of sitting on the sidelines. Dozens of your fellow ETR readers are already guaranteed to own their own business before the end of January.

Right now, over 450,000 other people are reading this email... and there are fewer than 250 slots total in the program.

You can choose to delay getting the details on this new program... you can delay staking your claim online... but I wouldn't recommend it. If you are ready to finally have your dreams, the time to act is now.

Here's the link again where you can get guaranteed online success and finally start living your dreams...

"I don't need another time-management system. I need more time!"

I understood how he felt. For more than 20 years, I had the same feeling. There was so much I wanted to do, and never enough time to do it.

I'd get to work early in the morning, motivated to have a super-productive day. But then, the moment I sat down, the phone would start ringing and my e-mail inbox would be blinking at me. And then a torrent of urgencies would bury me for the rest of the day.

Does that happen to you? Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by urgent tasks that you can't accomplish on time? Do you find yourself working longer than you'd like? Are you constantly under stress? Does it seem like the workload never gets any lighter?

"You don't need more hours," I told him. "If you had more, you'd be just as busy and stressed as you are now. And you would still be behind the curve."

That shut him up. He and I both knew he was the least productive member of his team. That's why I was teaching him how to organize his time. Not to give him yet another task to complete. I was trying to save his job.

With real unemployment around 16 percent today, you don't want to have the reputation of being unproductive. To be safe, you should make sure your boss views you as one of the most productive people in the company.

Coming in early and working late makes a good initial impression. But over the long run, what matters to your boss is how much useful work you get done. And there is no question in my mind: The amount of useful work you do is directly related to how organized you are.

In the old days, I would slip into a mental fog every time the words organization or management were uttered. But that changed when I started writing ETR. I began to practice the techniques I was writing about. And, lo and behold, they worked!

The time-management techniques I use now are responsible for at least a million dollars of extra income, 25 pounds of lost weight, six bestselling books, the production of four low-budget films, and a collection of short stories and more than 500 poems.

I'm a convert. And I want to make a convert out of you, too.

So here's my iron-clad guarantee: If you implement at least two of the three techniques described below and don't get wealthier, healthier, and happier in 30 days, I'll shine your shoes. I mean it.

Here are my three most important time-management techniques:

1. Set yearly and monthly goals, weekly objectives, and daily tasks.

First you set your yearly goals. Your break those down into monthly goals. Then you break your monthly goals into weekly objectives. And you break those objectives into daily tasks. A good system for coming up with a daily task list was developed in the 1980s by David Allen. He says you ask yourself four questions about each of your weekly objectives:

  • What do I need to do to take the next step?
  • Do I need to gather more information?
  • Do I need to take or delegate some specific action?
  • Or do I need to do nothing for a certain period of time?

2. Prioritize your task list.

The best method for prioritizing was developed by the Franklin Covey organization. The idea is to put each task on your list into one of four categories:

  • important and urgent
  • important but not urgent
  • not important but urgent
  • not important and not urgent

You should give top priority to the important-but-not-urgent tasks. Why? Because those are usually the ones that will help you accomplish your long-term goals -- the goals that will have the greatest impact on your life. And if you don't give them priority, they will never get done.

3. Get up an hour earlier every day.

That extra hour is yours. It is sacred. Use it to work on a task related to your most important long-term goal. Do not do anything else during that hour.

  • Do NOT open your e-mail.
  • Do NOT read the newspaper.
  • Do NOT look at your inbox.

Just sit down and start working on that life-changing goal.

There lots of other ways to make your time serve you better. (One is to clump together all similar activities -- such as phone calls or e-mails -- on your schedule.) But the above three are the ones that have had the greatest effect on my personal productivity.

Number One Son called from L.A. to ask my advice. He said he was thinking of investing in rental real estate. He had put aside some money and had identified some duplexes and quadruplexes that are selling "pretty cheap," and wondered if I thought they made economic sense.

"I could give you some complicated math to do," I told him, "but it would be simpler if you just follow my rule of thumb."

"What's that?"

"I won't pay more than eight times gross rent."

He was quiet for a moment. I could almost hear his mental calculator reviewing the properties he was looking at. "Eight times rent?" he asked, skeptically.

"Yes, eight times rent."

"So, let me get this straight," he said. "I pay $3,000 a month to rent the house I live in. (It is a cute, two-bedroom, two-bath ranch in a reasonably nice neighborhood in Hollywood Hills.) Are you saying I shouldn't pay more than $240,000 for this?"

"Not if you want to use it as a rental property."

"But it's worth $900,000!" he exclaimed.

"Maybe to its owner. But only a fool would pay that much for it as an investment."

I went on to explain that I am getting eight-to-one yields on houses all over South Florida. If I pay cash, I'm generally making about 6 percent on my money, net-net (300 percent better than the best long-term CD) and not counting appreciation. If I finance the deal at 80 percent, I can still get some monthly cash out of the deal and leverage my investment by buying several more similar properties.

"That's what you should do," I told my son.

I am buying real estate again, but I'm not buying real estate stocks. That's because there is still, as I've said, plenty of bad news waiting to come out of the real estate market.

Single family homes –-- especially entry-level homes -- are an exception. The inventory of new single-family homes has fallen to its lowest level since 1982, according to The Wall Street Journal.

But commercial real estate, some apartment complexes, and most condominiums are still in for a lot more deflation.

Consider these facts:

  • Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have taken in more than $100 billion from the government. Yet they still own more than $40 billion worth of overpriced apartment buildings. And the loans on those properties account for half the delinquencies the institutions are dealing with.
  • In the third quarter, almost 11 percent of all housing units (14.2 million) were unoccupied year round. And the homeowner vacancy rate, measuring the percentage of owned units, either empty or for sale, was 2.6 percent. That's an all-time high.
  • Rental vacancies were up to 11 percent during the same period. That is almost double what they were just a year ago.

Those are my reasons for being scared of real estate stocks generally. But IDE's Steve McDonald recently made an argument for buying REITs (real estate investment trusts), apartment REITs in particular, that's pretty clever. It's not a fundamental play, he told me, but one based on his expectation that the government isn't going to let Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae go belly up. Here's what Steve had to say:

"The fundamental are there, but there is a much bigger reason why this section of the market will survive and in fact do very well, vote buying.

"FNMA and Freddie Mac financed 80% of the affordable housing loans during the peak of the real estate market. The federal government cannot allow FNMA or Freddie Mac to default on loans that house so many low and middle income families, but more importantly, voters. It will never happen.

"The fallout to the Democrats would be catastrophic. Add to the fact that some of the key people are already in trouble in congressional races and we have an almost iron clad guarantee that nothing will happen to these properties."

Don Hauptman, veteran copywriter, author, language expert, and featured columnist in Early to Rise, just clued me in to a re-re-release of what many movie critics consider to be a classic. It's We the Living, the film version of Ayn Rand's first book.

We the Living is primarily a love story, set in the aftermath of the communist revolution in Russia. The protagonists struggle against an oppressive regime in a heroic effort to achieve their goals.

It wasn't a Hollywood production. (In fact, the filmmakers didn't even have the rights to the book or permission from Rand.) It was made in fascist Italy during World War II, and was banned by Mussolini soon after its release. Its anti-totalitarian themes evidently hit a little too close to home.

Fast-forward to 1988. The film was rediscovered, restored, and re-released in art houses worldwide to critical acclaim. That's where Don comes in. A self-described lifelong admirer of Rand, he saw a rough cut of the film, invested in it, and worked to spread the word about it.

He's stayed in the loop all these years. And now, We the Living is back as a two-disc special edition DVD. You get the movie, Italian with English subtitles, plus several special features, including a making-of documentary. You can order it through Amazon here.

Rand's name has been popping up everywhere lately, in part because of the economic crisis. She was an enthusiastic defender of capitalism and free markets. And many successful entrepreneurs cite her novels and ideas as a major influence.

Even if you're not a Rand fan, you can enjoy this great piece of cinema history... or pass it on to a friend or family member during this holiday season.

If you are falling asleep around 2:00 p.m. each day, you are not alone. Many, if not most, workers go through a period of post-lunch listlessness. When that happens, don't try to push yourself to keep working. You'll be wasting your time. It's better to perk yourself up by taking a short nap (if that works for you) or going outside and doing some exercise.

Here are five things I do to avoid the afternoon blahs and keep my energy high all day:

1. Sometimes I skip lunch -- or at least skip the carbohydrates. I find that if I eat an eggs-only breakfast, I can go without lunch or make do with a can of sardines at my desk.

2. If I go out for lunch, I keep it light -- both in terms of total calories and carbohydrates. Usually, that means a mixed salad with a little chicken.

3. I like some caffeine around noon. A glass of iced tea or a shot of espresso does nicely.

4. Exercise helps. I do a half-hour of vigorous weightlifting or sprinting just before or after lunch.

5. If all else fails, I take a nap. I think of it as a little siesta. Ten or 15 minutes is enough to wake me up and get me going again.

A touching note from a longtime reader and attendee of our recent Info-Marketing Bootcamp...

"Hi Michael,

"It was a pleasure meeting you at the ETR Bootcamp. Your essay today hit a chord with me. My wife of 54 years died a year and a half ago. In the past month, the spouses of three of my friends died. Since I live in an adult community, death is no stranger here.

"After the death of my wife, I did a lot of introspection. I am thankful for the 54 years I had with her. I am thankful for all the friends I have who gave me support after my loss. I am thankful for my two wonderful children who continually support me. Prior to my wife's death, I didn't think much of what to be thankful for.

"As for the denial of death, one cannot deny that it will eventually come. Until it does, we should make the best of the years we have left. I'm 77 now, and I am looking to live to 120. One of the reasons I went to Bootcamp was to be able to afford to live that long.

"Thank you for giving me something else to think about."
