The Circle of Life

By Robert Ringer

Throughout much of my life, I paid little attention to the miracles that surrounded me. I was too busy thinking about business and money... too busy being annoyed by annoying people. I had no time to think about the real world -- the world that matters. Nature and I were perfect strangers.

Funny how life plays out. Who would have thought that some of my best friends would turn out to be trees?

I know that people often say a dog is man's best friend -- and I like dogs... so long as someone else feeds them, walks them, and, well, does all the rest of the stuff that goes along with having a dog as your best friend. But what I like best about trees is that they take care of themselves... and, unlike dogs, they usually outlive you.

My favorite trees are the 75 or so that jut out from the back-left corner of my house at a 45-degree angle, like a perfectly drilled platoon. I visit my leafy pals -- who shield me from the outside world -- just about every day. In the slightest breeze, they whisper their secrets to me.

A few weeks ago, my trees were having a special evening. Their leaves had turned multi-shades of gold, brown, and reddish-purple. There was a chill in the air, and it was as though they were letting me know they were packing it in for the winter.

On this fine evening, Ravel's "Bolero" felt right. I hadn't played that CD for more than a year, but for some reason my hand pulled it off the shelf. As I watched my trees and listened to the music, I thought about the man I used to be. Then I thought about my new best friends... whispering to me through their fluttering leaves... with Ravel's "Bolero" capturing their message symphonically.

The magical music also brought to mind Dudley Moore in the classic film 10. Remember Dudley Moore, that funny little English guy with the club foot... obsessed with Bo Derek... and, his ultimate fantasy, ending up in bed with her in the posh Las Hadas Hotel in Manzanillo, Mexico... with Ravel's "Bolero" playing triumphantly on the soundtrack? How in the world could I have possibly known that less than 10 years later I would live in a villa right next door to that very hotel, and that my son would be born in Manzanillo?

Hard to believe, but Dudley Moore has been dead for more than eight years now. And Bo Derek, the 23-year-old "10″ in the film is now 54 years old, a grown woman fending for herself... her outrageously handsome svengali of a husband, John Derek, having passed on a full 12 years ago. These wandering thoughts brought a nostalgic smile to my lips. Yet, at the same time, made me feel sad about how inexorably life moves forward.

My eyes and thoughts shifted back to the trees. Soon, I thought to myself, most of the trees will be bare and their appearance will once again be somber. Happily, they are reborn every spring, live life to the fullest in the summer, enter the twilight of their lives in the fall... then, finally, they seemingly die. But not really. In truth, they merely hibernate. It's more like recycling than death.

Death is but an illusion. And not just for trees in the winter. When a human being dies, he, too, is recycled. Not one atom of the body is lost. The atoms are simply rearranged when the soul moves on. How are they rearranged? It's not our job to figure that out. As Deepak Chopra put it in his book Life After Death:

"A drop of water becomes vapor, which is invisible, yet vapor materializes into billowing clouds, and from clouds rain falls back to earth, forming river torrents and eventually merging into the sea. Has the drop of water died along the way? No, it undergoes a new expression at each stage. Likewise, the idea that I have a fixed body locked in space and time is a mirage. Any drop of water inside my body could have been ocean, cloud, river, or spring the day before. I remind myself of this fact when the bonds of daily life squeeze too tight."

When Chopra says "the bonds of daily life squeeze too tight," it sounds very much like the pressure I felt back in the days when business and making money were the only things I thought about... and still feel occasionally. Perspective is a magic tool for easing those bonds.

Which brings me back to my Ravel's "Bolero" evening a few weeks ago. My thoughts drifted away from the movie 10, and I began thinking about the late Paul Newman and a scene from one of his most memorable films, Cool Hand Luke.

Newman's character, Luke, had escaped from a prison chain gang earlier in the day, and a posse was closing in on him. He takes refuge in an old abandoned church and begins talking to God about what a hard case he has been all his life.

Finally, he gets down on his knees and asks God what he should do. Just then, his fellow escapee, Dragline (George Kennedy), bursts in the side door and frantically warns him that the police are outside. Whereupon Luke, displaying that classic Newman grin, looks up at the ceiling and says, "Is that your answer, Old Man? You're a hard case too, ain't you?"

I've thought about that scene many times over the years, because the truth is that none of us has a clue about what the "Old Man" has in store for us, and it seems to me that it takes a great deal of arrogance to claim otherwise.

I often think that the world we are so bogged down in is nothing more than a gigantic hoax that nature has played on us. I'm talking about the world we spend most of our time focusing on -- the world of media pundits who spew the same old cliches at us day after day... politicians who offer to give us more of our neighbors' wealth if we will just agree to give them power over our lives... multi-millionaire athletes who lead us to believe that their triumphs will somehow make our own lives more worthy and fulfilling... nonsense and illusions that must surely cause nature to smile at us condescendingly.

In my heart of hearts, I believe that what we normally think of as the real world isn't real at all. It's as though we're all children acting out a play on a spherical stage spinning around in space.

But the trees... and everything else that we call "nature"... perhaps they know the answers to all the questions whirling around in our heads: How did we get here? Why are we here? Where are we going? The fact is that we just don't know. Walt Whitman may have come up with an answer that transcends all others when he wrote, in his poem Miracles, "To me, every hour of the light and dark is a miracle, every cubic inch of space is a miracle."

And speaking of miracles, the miracle of spring isn't as far away as you might think. I love spring, because it invigorates the soul by serving as a reminder that nothing ever really dies. If you, too, sometimes feel the need to ease the bonds of daily life, I highly recommend that you start taking a closer look at the real world -- the world that's all around you -- and spend less time thinking about the shallow, insane world that most of the human race only believes is real.

"Thinking is hard work."

"Outstanding article! Three points I'm especially glad Michael made -- they apply equally to speaking.

1. We are mis-educated to think that writing needs to be grandiose.

2. A simpler statement has more credibility than a more complex one.

3. Good writing requires good thinking -- and thinking is hard work!"

Having Trouble Getting Motivated?

It happens to the best of us. But if procrastination becomes a habit -- you're doomed! Let success mentor Bob Cox share with you his strategies for avoiding this pitfall. And that's just a small taste of the techniques he's got on offer...

Today's Words That Work: Inexorable

Inexorable (in-EK-ser-uh-bul) -- from the Latin -- means unyielding; unalterable.

Example (as used by Robert Ringer today): "These wandering thoughts brought a nostalgic smile to my lips. Yet, at the same time, made me feel sad about how inexorably life moves forward."

Who's doing this anyway?

Sunday, May 30, 2010

Dear Early to Rise Reader,

"Made in China."

How many times have you seen THAT on a product?

It's no secret that China manufactures thousands upon thousands of products in their home country... then exports them en masse to the USA and other countries for sale.

Who's doing all the importing and selling?

For the most part... it's the "big bad corporations." They import BILLIONS of dollars worth of Chinese-made products each year... then resell these products in their American stores... at HUGE markups... for MASSIVE profits.

But guess what?

You don't need to be a big, bad corporation to profit from China's cheaply-produced products.

And you don't need all the stores, employees, or overhead, either!

We found a way you can do it from home.

In fact, all you need is a computer, an internet connection, a minimal amount of start-up cash, and the right guidance... and you could enjoy the same kind of profits that today's biggest billion-dollar corporations enjoy.

Please read the following report to find out a quick, easy, and super-affordable way to start selling cheaply-produced products from China...

... and potentially reap huge profits from the comfort of your own home.

To Your Success,

Living a Full-Capacity Life

Today, I'd like to talk about health. My health. Your health. The prospect of having a richer life by enjoying better health.

I've been told that I shouldn't write about health. I'm not a doctor. I'm not a nutritionist. I can't claim to be an expert on health in any way. But I do know something about accumulating wealth and living well -- and what I know is directly related to health.

Because without my good health, I couldn't have accomplished nearly as much as I have in my career. That includes the bestselling books I've written, the multimillion-dollar businesses I've developed, and all the money I've made.

I work like a madman, enjoy a busy social life, drink wine, smoke cigars, and I compete athletically (in Jiu Jitsu) with men half my age.

I can do these things because I wake up each day bounding with energy -- and I maintain that energy from 6:00 in the morning till 10:00 or 11:00 at night.

In the past 10 years, my energy level has increased. At an age when I should be slowing down, I'm speeding up. Six months ago, I took a battery of tests to determine my "biological fitness." In every category, I was much younger than my chronological age. In lung capacity -- arguably the most important determinant of longevity -- I was rated as a 26-year-old.

Other than a bout of malaria when I was living in Africa, I have never had a serious illness. I get the yearly cold and have my share of sports injuries, but I'm able to perform at 100 percent capacity 90 percent of the time.

I attribute my health and fitness to three things:

1. How I eat

2. How I exercise

3. How I heal myself

None of my "secrets" are difficult to do. All are based on good science. You can adopt one or all of them easily into your current routine.

How I Eat

I used to avoid red meat, eggs, butter, and ice cream. I used to eat grains with every meal -- as the government told me I should. That seemed to work when I was young. But when I hit my forties, my weight ballooned up to 235 pounds.

Then I began to work professionally with Dr. Atkins. I consulted with him on his publishing ventures and spent time at his clinic in New York City. I read his books and talked to him. What I discovered was that there was very little science behind the government's recommended diet. In fact, there were very few scientific studies done on nutrition.

Dr. Atkins was a pioneer in studying the effects of a high-carbohydrate diet. His research suggested to him that the argument against cholesterol and saturated fats had no basis at all. Its advocates were groups funded by the wheat and margarine industries. He conducted clinical trials of his own and discovered that, in general, people who ate a high-protein, low-carbohydrate diet were leaner, healthier, and more energetic.

Based on what I learned from Dr. Atkins, I made some changes in my diet. And I noticed an immediate improvement in my health. My appetite decreased. My post-lunch drowsiness disappeared. And muscles started popping up where I thought none existed.

Years later, I began a working relationship with Dr. Al Sears. He took Dr. Atkins's work to a higher level. Dr. Sears told me that most of the meats I was eating were laden with hormones and omega-6 fatty acids. He had discovered that grass-fed beef actually has a better fatty-acid ratio than salmon!

When I switched from supermarket meat to grass-fed meat, my lean body mass increased. I also followed Dr. Sears's recommendations to eat more organic vegetables, avoid fruit juices, and limit sugar-laden desserts. Again, I noticed an improvement in the way I felt right away.

When Dr, Sears began reporting his findings 10 years ago, nobody else was talking about a "primal" diet. Today, it is recognized by many as the healthiest diet in the world. People are jumping on the bandwagon in droves. And that's a good thing.

How I Exercise

I used to lift weights and jog. My muscles were always sore, and I had a hard time getting stronger, however much I tried. But I'd had such good results with Dr. Sears's recommendations concerning my diet that I decided to give his PACE workout a try too.

And within a few weeks, I dropped 20 pounds of fat.

When I started PACE, something quite remarkable happened. It felt like my lungs were ballooning in my chest. I could even see a difference in my chest when I looked in the mirror. I seemed to be able to take in twice as much oxygen, and I had more energy.

Dr. Sears told me that lung capacity is the best indicator of "all-cause mortality." That's doctor-speak for all the ways you could possibly die. In other words, the bigger your lung capacity, the longer you'll live. And I don't doubt it. The extra oxygen I've been getting has given me not only more energy but an unshakable feeling of optimism.

The PACE workout is truly revolutionary. It is based on the way our bodies were programmed to exercise over thousands of years. In that regard, it is compatible with the "primal" diet.

Dr. Sears's studies have shown that PACE produces:

  • Expanded lung volume

  • High-speed fat loss

  • Reserve capacity in the heart

  • A higher metabolic rate with increased insulin sensitivity

  • New muscle growth

  • Better sexual performance

And if you get the same results I've been getting, you will:

  • Build strength and reserve capacity in your heart and lungs

  • Avoid heart attacks and cardiovascular disease

  • Develop a powerful and disease-resistant immune system

  • Dramatically increase your energy levels

  • Burn fat, even while you rest

If you'd like to know more about PACE...

How I Heal Myself

Since I am active in Jiu Jitsu, a very physical sport, I am subject to athletic injuries on a regular basis. But I've reduced them drastically in the past two years by doing four things:

1. 15 minutes of yoga each morning

2. 30 minutes of Pilates twice a month

3. An hour of massage once a week

4. Acupressure when I have an injury

Yoga is an amazing thing. It will make you limber and strong in ways you can't imagine unless you do it.

I used to have trouble touching my fingers to my toes. Now I can put my palms on the floor and my nose to my knees. When you practice yoga for 15 minutes a day, like I do, you need to be sure to stretch your body in four directions. Forward, backward, and to each side.

Pilates is in many ways the opposite of yoga. The breathing is different and so are the movements. While yoga teaches you to relax and breathe with your lower belly extended, Pilates teaches you to keep a tight core and breathe with your stomach sucked in.

The combination of yoga and Pilates is a perfect yin-yang. There are plenty of yoga and Pilates programs available, but if you'd like to do both at the same time, I know of one that is designed specifically for that purpose.

I get a deep-tissue massage once a week. It keeps my hips and shoulders loose (the two most important joints for athletic performance) and helps repair my tissues quickly when I am hurt.

Most massage therapists are next to useless. They don't know anything about physiology. They simply rub you down. Find someone who understands how to go deep and break up scar tissue. Find someone who is willing to work hard on the areas of your body that need work. You will know immediately when you have found someone who is very good. You'll feel significantly better 24 hours after the massage.

Acupressure has recently become a big part of my health routine.

It is related to acupuncture, which you may be more familiar with. Both are ancient Chinese therapies for curing almost anything that ails you by liberating blocked "chi" at key points in the body. But where acupuncturists do it by inserting fine needles into the trigger points, acupressure practitioners do it by applying pressure with their fingertips.

These therapies are 5,000 years old. That makes them more than twice as old as Western Medicine.

There is more than enough historical documentation to make acupuncture worthy of consideration. And, indeed, millions of Americans have tried it and many of them have reported good results.

But recently, studies at Western universities have confirmed that acupressure, too, works.

In fact, the World Health Organization published a review of controlled trials using acupressure and concluded that it is effective for the treatment of 28 conditions. There was also evidence to suggest that it may be effective for several dozen more.

I tried acupuncture several times and was impressed with the immediate results. But my schedule was too busy to do it regularly. So I kept it in the back of my mind as therapy for when I have an acute injury.

Then, a few months ago, a friend of mine introduced me to a woman named Laura Devlin who teaches people how to use acupressure to treat themselves.

She explained that the pressure is applied to places on the skin that are especially sensitive to bioelectrical impulses in the body and conduct those impulses readily.

Stimulating these pressure points triggers the release of endorphins, the petrochemicals that relieve pain. As a result, pain is blocked and the flow of blood and oxygen to the affected area is increased. This causes the muscles to relax and promotes healing.

What I especially like about acupressure is that I can use it in my office or any public place, and nobody even notices that I'm doing it. (I often give myself an acupressure treatment four or five times a day.)

Laura's put together an instructional DVD on acupressure that is published by Naturecast Products, a company I know and trust.

You should take a look to see if acupressure might be something that could benefit you. You can get the full details by clicking right here.

So that's my three-part program. None of it is difficult or time consuming. My morning yoga routine takes 15 minutes as does my afternoon PACE workout. I spend an hour a week doing Pilates, and just a few minutes every day with my acupressure treatments.

I do Jiu Jitsu training for an hour a day, but that is my sport. It's a pleasure for me. It certainly helps me stay stronger than the average person, but it's not necessary for my health so I don't recommend it to you unless you think you might enjoy it.

If you are not in perfect health or lack the energy you need to keep your career on the right trajectory, I strongly recommend these practices. I am certain they will improve your life.

When they do, please write to me and tell me exactly how they worked for you (just send an email to AskMichael@ETRFeedback.com). I want to know about your specific experiences, good or bad. I want to answer your questions. I want to hear your ideas.

There is no reason why you should work at less than full capacity regardless of how old you are. But you won't know how true that is until you start one of the programs I just told you about. Then you'll see for yourself... and be motivated to gradually adopt them all.

I wish you happiness, wealth, and wisdom. But you won't get your full share of what you deserve without maximum health.

[Ed. Note: You've just read about Michael Masterson's exercise and recovery program. And the good news is you can follow the same program quite easily. For more information on Dr. Sears's PACE program go here. And you can go here to find out more about acupressure.]

Your ETR Insider

Early To Rise Insider
From The Desk of Laura Rodini Volume 1  |  Issue 15   |  May 28, 2010

Dear ETR Insider,

For years, Michael Masterson has been encouraging his readers to start a side business, preferably on the Internet, in order to develop multiple sources of income.

With many hundreds of millions of dollars to his credit, Michael certainly knows a thing or two about how to do it!

He says the simplest way to start a successful side business right now is to harness the production powerhouse that is China.

"First," he says, "you find a popular product that is selling for about $100."

"Next, you find someone in China to knock it off and sell it to you for $10.

"Then, you sell it to your market at half price."

Hard to do? Not at all!

In our brand-new China Wholesale Trader program, ETR's own Marc Charles shows you exactly how to set up your own Chinese import business: how to find manufacturers, how to get in touch with them, the best way to negotiate, and where to sell your products online.

He even gives you advice on which products to sell! Here's a hint: Do a quick eBay search, and you can see that electronic gadgets (cell phones, laptops, iPods, and iPads) and school-related items (boots, backpacks, and dorm decor) are hot. Another huge market is for herbal supplements and natural remedies.

This business requires very little start-up capital. And most Chinese manufacturers let you buy small quantities so you can test your market.

On top of that, it doesn't require office space or employees. You don't have to deal with bureaucratic red tape. And with drop-shipping, you don't even have to maintain any inventory. The products are sent directly to your customers.

But don't take my word for it. Check out Valerie Johnson's story. She used this approach to create a super-successful business that went from $0 to $1.8 million in revenues in just 5 years!

As a special bonus, we're sending charter members of Marc's China Wholesale Trader these reports:

  • SPECIAL BONUS #1 - "The Google Surge! How to Make Money Online by Leveraging Search Engines and Savvy Internet Tactics"

  • SPECIAL BONUS #2 - "The China Wholesale Trader Terminology: Glossary and Definitions of Import and Export Acronyms"

  • SPECIAL BONUS #3 - An exclusive interview with Marc Charles (This is a great way to get the basics down FAST.)

Click here for all the details.

| Why China, Why Now? |

Response to our new China Wholesale Trader program has been tremendous. In fact, it's become one of our bestselling products.

But a few readers have told us that they're holding off on buying the program because they have concerns about doing business in China.

So I want to take a moment to alleviate those concerns.

We're not suggesting that you close up shop and move to China. And we're certainly not trying to take manufacturing jobs away from folks in the U.S.

What we are trying to do is help people like you profit from a tremendous opportunity - possibly the greatest entrepreneurial opportunity in our lifetime.

You see, for the first time, individuals can compete on a nearly equal footing with the world's largest retailers - the Walmarts and Amazons and Best Buys. They can buy modest quantities of popular products cheaply... and have them delivered to the States in a matter of days.

It's no stretch to say that America is a country of entrepreneurs. There are tens of millions of us who are looking for ways to start a successful business and ensure our financial security. Most people have no idea how easy it is to start up a Chinese import trading company... and so we're trying to spread the word.

Of course, when it comes to an unregulated market like China, due diligence is critical. That's why Marc Charles makes a point of helping China Wholesale Trader members distinguish between fool's gold and the real thing.

In Marc's program, he' not only shows you how to get in on this lucrative market quickly and easily, but safely too:

You'll learn:

  • How to know if an exporter is legit. You'll find out what a "trust pass" is and why it can make all the difference in the world to your success. Get this wrong and you're guaranteed to fail.

  • How to master the lingo. Other importers will think you're an old pro, which means they won't try to take advantage of you. You can learn all the necessary terms in less than 2.5 hours.

  • How to correctly handle the exchange of money, whether it's dollars, yen, or euros.

  • How to order in small quantities. Sometimes you can even order one item at a time so you don't have to keep your money tied up in inventory.

And more.

One more note: Agora, Inc.'s founder Bill Bonner and Agora Financial's publisher Addison Wiggin just came back from a research expedition in China.

And Michael Masterson has there several times in the past 20 years to do business.

But, Michael says, only now is it possible for people who don't have international businesses like he had and Agora, Inc. has to get involved.

That's really the crux of it. We at ETR feel that China trading is a business opportunity as big as information publishing, and that's why we are setting up programs and protocols to make this a core part of our business in the future. The response we just got was an indication of that. We wouldn't stand behind a program we didn't believe in, and we absolutely believe in Marc's China Wholesale Trader system.

So keep your feedback coming on this. I'd especially like to hear from all of you who have given the system a try in the past few weeks.

"Crashes and huge stock losses are not an inevitable part of the investing process," says IDE's Steve McDonald.

Tell that to my friend Gary. He wakes up at least twice a night to check his investments online.

Steve has a trading strategy that can help Gary - and you - sleep soundly... no matter what the overall market is up to.

Especially in light of last week's market gyrations!

George Cone
My little cosmonaut

One more thing before I sign off this week…

My dog George had to get a bump removed from his paw this week.

After the procedure, he was feeling a little under the weather. I think he's embarrassed by that cone he has to wear around his head to keep him from chomping at it. So for a special treat, I brought him with me to my favorite Italian restaurant.

He got loads of attention. And the chef even brought out a meatball, just for him!

A wise man once said, "My goal in life is to be as good of a person as my dog already thinks I am." I couldn't agree more.

Until next week,

Got Writer's Block?
By Jason Holland

As an online entrepreneur, one of your biggest challenges is the blank screen. I'm talking about coming up with fresh content for your newsletters, website, blog, letters to your subscribers, and all the rest. And not just "content" but new ideas, concepts, and advice that will stir your readers' emotions, make them think, and maybe even rile up the Web.

In his essay today, Internet marketing consultant David Cross gives you a simple formula for overcoming writer's block and coming up with engaging material.

-----------------------------------------------------Highly Recommended-----------------------------------------------------

You Don't Need Much to Start an Internet-based Import/Export Business

The Internet has made doing business so much easier in so many markets and niches. And that includes importing products from China for pennies on the dollar and selling them online for mark-ups of 500%, 1,000%, even 2,000% or more...

  • You don't need a huge amount of start-up capital. In fact, you can get started with as little as $50 or so... and start making deals almost immediately...

  • You don't need a storefront, employees, or equipment. It's just you, your computer, and your Internet connection...

  • You don't need to quit your day job -- yet. You can do Internet import/exporting "on the side" at first. And once your business takes off, you can go full-time.

This really could be one of the greatest professions in the world. And ALL you need to get started is the insider knowledge you'll get from The China Wholesale Secret Alliance.

"If you've got a big mouth and you're controversial, you're going to get attention."

Simon Cowell

Put Some Lead in Your Pencil!
By David Cross

I've written before about what to write about when you're "stuck."

How-to articles are the perfect antidote to writer's block. But if your goal is to create content for your e-mail newsletter or website to attract search engines, you cannot rely on them every time. Thankfully, there is another type of article that's remarkably simple to write. Your readers will love it -- and so will the search engines.

I was reminded of this by recent events here in rural Oregon. Last deer hunting season, I was in a local store and overheard a heated debate about lead in deer meat. It turns out that researchers in North Dakota had found lead fragments from bullets in commercially sold ground venison. That set off a health scare that rippled through the hunting community nationwide.

There are strong opinions on both sides. Some hunters have eaten their kills for years and report no ill effects. On the other side are folks who think the meat should be banned.

Your business probably isn't concerned with this issue. But there are any number of controversial topics in every market, niche, industry, hobby, etc. You're probably thinking of one now... and maybe even getting riled up about it.

That's good. Use it. Share your opinion with your readers and/or customers Or share both sides of the debate and act as commentator and independent expert.

Perhaps you run a gardening business. If so, you may remember the controversy some years ago concerning Monsanto's patent on a new strain of wheat. The wheat was derived from a variety that farmers in India cultivated for millennia. But when the patent was granted, it gave Monsanto the legal right to (among other things) prevent those farmers from saving and planting their seeds from harvest to harvest, as they had always done.

This is the kind of hot button issue that would be perfect for someone in the gardening business to tackle. You would ask yourself where you and your customers stand. Do you believe that Monsanto was guilty of "bio-piracy" -- stealing a product developed by generations of native farmers and then modifying it? Or do you believe that Monsanto was the "inventor" of this new strain of wheat and, as such, should be allowed to protect its investment?

Taking Sides

Lead in venison and wheat patents are just two of the millions of controversial topics in the world. It won't take you long to come up with dozens, or even hundreds, that you have a strong opinion on... and that could be of interest to your customers.

In fact, take a moment to start a list right now... right off the top of your head. Jot down your initial thoughts on subjects you really care about. (You can do research later to back up your point of view.)

Then use those notes when it comes time to put together a blog entry, article, or essay.

You don't even have to be a "writer" to produce good content. Speak your mind into a recorder and then transcribe it. Or record a conversation with someone who feels just as passionately as you do about a particular issue.

This is even better when you take the opposing position!

For example, what if I called Wayne LaPierre, the NRA's Executive Vice President, and started carrying on about gun control. You think he'd have a word or two on the subject?

Or what if I called Phil Radford, Executive Director of Greenpeace in the USA, and told him that all this crap about protecting whales is a load of bull. You think he'd have something to say?

You can bet he would!

What about you? Do you have an opinion about:

  • Your business...

  • Your industry...

  • The use of your products...

  • The way a competitor is doing it wrong (or right)...

  • Some new law that pisses you off...

  • Some topic that your customer service people are starting to receive an increasing number of questions about...

Write about it! And take an aggressive stance. Although people say they want "balanced reporting," balanced reporting is bland.

And encourage your readers to give you feedback. This keeps the debate going. If your site is set up to allow comments, invite those comments. Or ask your readers to share their thoughts via e-mail.

You can then base your next article on all that input.

It starts with simply taking a stand -- one of the best sources of content for your e-mail newsletters and website.

[Ed. Note: Expressing your opinion on controversial issues is just one strategy for creating quality content for your Internet business. You'll learn many others, as well as dozens of Internet marketing techniques, tactics, and "secrets" from the experts at ETR's upcoming 5 Days in July Internet Business Building Conference.

Even if you're a total beginner, are a bit (or very) tech-phobic, or have never run a business, you can start your own profitable online venture. And the Early to Rise team, including experts responsible for the success of Agora Inc., can help you do it in just five days.

Come with nothing... and leave 5 days later with a fully functioning Internet business... and the skills and expertise you need to make it thrive. Our special early sign-up bonus offer ends this Friday. So don't delay. Find out more about 5 Days in July here.]

"Great article. I've printed a copy to give to my 20-year-old grandson. The grandson that buys $20-$30 T-shirts, $100+ basketball shoes, $100+ replica basketball jerseys of famous players, and, of course, the $35 shaving razor that a famous baseball player uses. The grandson that drives a 1998 Chevy Malibu (that I pay $187 a month for). The grandson who put a $650 sound system into that same car. The grandson who talks about going to college someday. The same grandson that delivers pizzas for a living. Now if I can just get him to read it."

The Language Perfectionist: "Who That?"

By Don Hauptman

A reader of this column asked about the proper use of who and that.

Here's an often-cited quip by George Bernard Shaw: "The government who robs Peter to pay Paul can always depend on the support of Paul."

Shaw is regarded as a skilled writer. But is his use of who correct? Not according to language guru Charles Harrington Elster. In his useful and entertaining style guide What in the Word?, Elster writes: "It is a grave sin to use who of things, as in 'the company who.'"

Thus, when referring to corporations, industries, marching bands, animals, plants, stones, and other nonhuman entities, always use that.

Now consider these examples:

  • "I have a good feeling that he's an actor that can do well given the strength of the script."

  • "The surgeon that performs the operation should warn you that after the procedure you will experience both discomfort and bruising...."

  • Newspaper headline: "CEOs That Rock"

Several authoritative sources I consulted insist that the above uses of that are entirely acceptable. And after all, even Judy Garland sang about "the man that got away."

But in this instance, I disagree with the experts. To my eye and ear, that in reference to people has an awkward and inappropriate effect. It reduces humans to the status of inanimate objects.

So my advice is to stick with who for your fellow humans, and that for everything else.

[Ed Note: For more than three decades, Don Hauptman was an award-winning independent direct-response copywriter and creative consultant. He is author of The Versatile Freelancer, an e-book that shows writers and other creative professionals how to diversify their careers into speaking, consulting, training, and critiquing.]

The #1 Reason Internet Businesses Fail

By Perry Marshall (with Jack Born)

Quick... What business is McDonald's in?

Burgers, right? It says so right on their sign. Bazillions served every day.

BUZZZZZ... Sorry. No prize for you. Thank you for playing.

McD's is REALLY in the business of selling...

Sugar water.

Don't just nod your head and move on. Take a minute to think about the size of the machine that Ray Kroc and friends created for just this purpose... this hidden purpose that almost no one (except you and me) knows about.

400,000 employees. 31,000 locations. Imagine the health insurance, the franchise infrastructure, the legal fees, the workman's comp, the advertising... all of it just to get in front of 47 million customers every day and make it easy for them to say "yes" to bladder-busting, diabetes-inducing gallons of dark brown sugar water.

The burgers keep the lights on.

The sugar water pays for the CEO's Lear jet and luxury estate in the Hamptons.

So what does this have to do with your success on the Internet?

It has to do with understanding the difference between "front-end" products (the burgers) and "back-end" products (the sugar water). Basically, you market an attractive front-end product to bring in new customers. Then you keep going back to those same customers with increasingly profitable back-end offers.

Having coached thousands of companies in nearly 200 industries (not to mention becoming famous as the author of the Definitive Guide to Google AdWords), I can tell you that not 1 in 100 entrepreneurs truly gets it.

If you're among the first to figure out that the big money is on the back end,  the profits quickly slide into your wallet.

Example: You look up, say, "sciatica pain" in Google because you want to sell information related to that subject. It's got great volume. You begin to imagine the money rolling in. You see your competitors selling $49 e-books. You conclude that all it takes to compete and win is to come up with a better e-book of your own.

What you don't realize is that in that market there are one, maybe two or three, marketers that have honed sophisticated systems designed to just get in front of a huge number of potential buyers... and eventually sell them something. Something very different than the e-book you see them promoting on their landing pages.

They're immune from surges in Google traffic costs. Heck, they're mostly immune from even getting banned from Google. Because they can afford to buy almost any traffic out there: banners, media, postcards, magazine ads, you name it.

Here are a few ways to take advantage of this information:

1. The more competitive your market, the greater the need for you to actually buy your competitors' products. Crawl around in their marketing machines and see what they're REALLY selling. Look for the sugar water.

2. If you're currently fishing in a secret "honey hole" that your competitors aren't savvy to, now's the time for you to figure out the "sugar water" equivalent to sell to your market... so you can ride the ups and downs of your market while your competitors freak out and watch their profits evanesce.

Allow me to suggest a strategy that will cost you nothing, yet educate you through content AND demonstration. By getting my free 5 Days to Success With Google AdWords course, you can see if you like the way I sell my products to you. (I think you'll like it a lot.)  The course not only gives you a handy "cheat sheet" on Google's system, it demonstrates how I capture prospective customers and earn their trust.

Savvy marketers will go ahead and also purchase my Definitive Guide to Google AdWords, just to see how we handle people after they buy. The Definitive Guide not only teaches you the intelligent way to research your market, it demonstrates the concept of Visitor Value. You'll discover why it's THE pivotal determining factor in who dominates your market.

But most important, when you buy my Definitive Guide, you will have purchased my primary front-end product -- and you'll soon see what my sugar water is. If all I sold was an e-book on Google advertising, I would have gone out of business long ago. You'll see how I practice what I preach.

One last story before I go: One of my clients is a pair of brothers named James and Joseph Bridges. They started an information marketing business in 2008 because they were tired of real estate. When we first started working together, they were netting somewhat below zero, selling sets of CDs and instruction guides in a cutthroat market.

We sat down together and built a lead-capture system and a series of back-end offers. A year later, they were making $20,000 per month and rapidly expanding their market share. And they got much more traction with their fan base because they were coming through with problems solved, rather than just selling e-books. Entire branches of their business had also become invisible to competitors.

If you're like the Bridges brothers, and if you're like McDonald's -- if the business you're really in is not obvious to most people -- you're getting the hang of it.

[Ed. Note: Ready for more of Perry Marshall's expert advice on doing business online? Perry, the noted Internet marketing and Google AdWords expert, offers a free "Google AdWords Cheat Sheet" at http://www.perrymarshall.com/agora/5day.

Understanding the incredible profit potential of back-end marketing is just one of the things you'll learn at Early to Rise's upcoming 5 Days in July Internet Business Building Conference. Every year, we bring in experts like Perry Marshall to give you the tools and techniques to be successful. Build your own fully operational business in just five days. But don't wait to sign up. Spots are going fast -- and our early sign-up bonus ends this Friday. Find out more here.]

Don't Even Think of Starting a Business Until You've Read This Book

Brian Tracy calls Michael Masterson's Ready, Fire, Aim "an extraordinary book -- full of practiced, proven strategies and techniques to help you make more sales and greater profits than you ever imagined possible."

And Robert Ringer says, "What sets Masterson apart from most of the gurus who write about how to do it is that he's actually done it -- over... and over... and over again."

Find out just what Michael is saying in his New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller here...

"Thanks for this thought-provoking article!"

"I thoroughly enjoyed reading today's ETR newsletter. I gave up watching TV almost six years ago. I thought that I would be missing out on current events and would be 'out of the loop' at work.

"However it turns out that I -- for 90% of topics -- am just as informed as everyone I speak to. It was also educational to read about why TV is seductive -- perceived relationships without having to give or really interact. In other words -- in my interpretation -- empty."

Why China Wants to Make You Rich

It's no secret that China exports billions and billions of dollars' worth of in-demand products to the USA (and other countries) every year.

Who's doing all the importing? Well... you might think only "big corporations" are in on it.

But one of the most experienced business experts we work with (he's launched more than 40 successful businesses over the past 28 years) has discovered a way for ANYONE... regardless of experience, education, or amount of start-up capital... to profit from Chinese imports.

Today's Words That Work: Evanesce

To evanesce (ev-uh-NES) -- from the Latin for "to vanish" -- is to disappear gradually; fade away.

Example (as used by Perry Marshall today): "If you're currently fishing in a secret 'honey hole' that your competitors aren't savvy to, now's the time for you to figure out the 'sugar water' equivalent to sell to your market... so you can ride the ups and downs of your market while your competitors freak out and watch their profits evanesce."
