Issue No. 3076 - $1.00 | Wednesday, August 11, 2010 |
Latest NewsI just finished watching a presentation sent over by the team at the Oxford Club. And right away I knew Early to Risers had to see it. It's all about avoiding what they call a "wealth-sapping blunder" many investors are making right now. And they show you how to cash in on individual stocks for immediate gains. They're using a technique one of their investment experts has created after years of study: The Single Stock Rally. Keep an eye on your inbox tomorrow to check out the presentation for yourself. - Jason Holland -----------------------------------------------------Highly Recommended----------------------------------------------------- The Simple Six-Figure Marketing Strategy Paul Lawrence spent less than $100 to start his first small business. He used just one marketing strategy to go after prospects. Soon he had so many customers that he could hire an employee to do the actual work while he focused on getting new accounts. He used this marketing strategy again... and almost instantly he was grossing $4,000 a month. The people he sold the business to (so he could finish college) used the same marketing strategy and are making $100,000 a year. "Ah, but a man's reach should exceed his grasp -- or what's a heaven for?" Robert Browning Do More by Believing Less"I've never done a deal that big," he said. "So what!" I said. "Just go for it. You've done similar deals lots of times." "True, but this time it's somehow different. Every time I think about it... it scares me." Billy's track record of accomplishments was impressive. At the age of 32, he had already built and sold three companies in the radiology industry for the nifty sum of $31,000,000. Now, with his fourth company, he was in a position to acquire his two largest competitors and become the big fish in a very profitable pond. Just like every other major accomplishment under his belt, Billy had taken that goal and plugged it into a system. He knew what individual steps, in what order, were needed to achieve it. I'd been coaching him for two years -- and as a result of our work together, he knew why he wanted to accomplish the goal and had a clear vision of the completed deal. But Billy had stopped short of taking the final, crucial step that would make the deal happen. His goal setting and achieving system was letting him down, and he didn't know why. Peggy had the same problem, but with a totally different set of circumstances. Peggy had taken up running as a way to network with a certain group of executives. Even though she was a novice runner, she managed to get into their exclusive running club through the recommendation of a friend. And she started to panic almost immediately. All of the members of the club were expected to participate in the Boston Marathon. And in order to participate in the Boston Marathon, you have to finish a sanctioned qualifying marathon in less than 3 hours and 45 minutes. How about you? Have you ever set a goal that makes your heart jump? Emotionally, you want the result. Intellectually, you know that it is possible. You have a strong reason for going after it... and you know what it will be like when you're there. The path is all mapped out, and the only thing between you and the end of the rainbow is taking the steps to get there. But instead of taking the steps, you freeze. What gives? Welcome to Billy and Peggy's problem. In working with more than 2,500 entrepreneurs and executives (as well as struggling with this problem myself), I've found a common thread. When we're reaching for a goal that is outside of our prior personal experience, we're stymied when we try to force ourselves beyond the level of belief we have in ourselves. In other words, we have to believe we can do it... or we won't. In Billy's case, he had acquired, grown, and sold companies, but he had never acquired and merged two companies. Because he had never done it before, he had to believe that he was capable of doing it. And he didn't believe it. With his focus on an end goal that he didn't believe he could achieve, he froze. None of the steps he had successfully taken toward the achievement of that goal mattered because he was focused too far out. Peggy suffered from the same paralysis. While she focused on and feared running 26 miles, she couldn't make herself run even one. Here's how I taught Billy and Peggy to overcome this obstacle...
Take a piece of paper. Write your BIG goal at the top. Write where you are currently at the bottom. Then write the steps, as you see them, to get from where you are to where you want to be. (Make them big steps. Don't worry about the details yet.)
Tune in to your body when you answer. Do you feel a small rush of anticipation -- or is there a part of you that begins to ache with anxiety? This is about trusting yourself, so be honest. If you can give a confident and honest "YES," without hesitation, go on to the next step and ask yourself the "Do I believe that I can _____?" question.
At this point, take a deep breath and smile. That's right, smile. You've found your sticking point. This is exciting -- and worthy of a little celebration.
Every minute you spend trying to convince yourself to believe more than you do is a wasted minute. But by focusing your energy where you believe, your level of belief in yourself automatically expands... and you achieve more and more goals. [Ed. Note: Using the power of belief to overcome life's obstacles and achieve great things is just a small part of what PJ McClure covers in his book Flip the S.W.I.T.C.H: How to Turn On and Turn Up Your Personal Mindset. Before the book is released by a major publisher, PJ has agreed to make a limited number of copies available to ETR readers at a special low price. Order the book today and you also get a FREE companion action guide to help you implement PJ's tips, techniques, and strategies. For more information, go here. PJ McClure is an alumnus of Early to Rise's annual Info-Marketing Bootcamp. Here's what he said after last year's event: "The content is amazing. The speakers are amazing. You get everything you need to know to get online, and they teach you how to implement it. I secured five joint ventures while I was here. This is the best money you can possibly spend." And we've invited PJ back this year to help us run the show. He'll be joined by more than a dozen of the top experts working on the Internet today. These industry leaders charge thousands for their consulting services. But they've agreed to come to Bootcamp and teach Early to Risers for a fraction of the price. Find out who they are, what they'll be teaching, and how it could change your life here.] -----------------------------------------------------Highly Recommended ----------------------------------------------------- You Don't Need Much to Start an Internet-Based Import/Export Business The Internet has made doing business so much easier in so many markets and niches. And that includes importing products from China for pennies on the dollar and selling them online at a markup of 200, 300, even 500 percent or more...
This really could be one of the greatest professions in the world. And ALL you need to get started is the insider knowledge you'll get from The China Wholesale Trader program. "I wanted you to know..." "I think your newsletters are fab and speak the truth. "I run a business in London, and employ two people. The recession has hit me, and at the beginning of this year I found it really hard to stay focused. Although I am not yet fully out of the woods, I can feel the sunbeams on my forehead showing me that we have nearly reached the exit. The number one thing to remember in any situation is that every struggle is a gift. It teaches you to be able to cope and appreciate life as it really is. "I am telling you this because I know that when I get e-mails from happy clients, it makes me feel that I am doing a good job -- and I wanted you guys to feel that way too. "Keep smiling." Jenny Trumper -----------------------------------------------------Highly Recommended----------------------------------------------------- Why You Should Be at Bootcamp Of all the many ways we teach people to succeed on the Internet, none is more effective than our yearly Info Marketing Bootcamp. This is a three-day, intensive program where you learn about the marketing strategies that are working - right now! We invite experts outside of ETR who have learned our methods and have devised new twists and tricks. They share them with their own clients at a great price. But as a favor to us, they share them with our people at a huge discount! Experts like Rich Schefren, Mike Koenigs, Brian Edmondson, Perry Marshall, and Joshua Boswell, to name just a few. And that's why, this November, aspiring entrepreneurs and successful business owners alike will be flocking to Delray Beach and our Info Marketing Bootcamp. Today's Words That Work: EfflorescentThe word efflorescent (ef-luh-RES-unt) -- from the French for "to flower out" -- describes something that bursts forth or erupts suddenly. Example (as used by Steve Paul in a syndicated review of Medium Raw: A Bloody Valentine to the World of Food and the People Who Cook by Anthony Bourdain: "I suppose it's a given that Anthony Bourdain is a potty mouth. Even when evoking a saint in his new collection of hot-and-cold food essays, he can't help dropping the emphatic, efflorescent curse." We want your feedback! ETR: Do More by Believing Less
Tuesday, August 10, 2010
Not yet a believer?
| Dear ETR Reader - How much do you really believe it could happen to YOU? At the 2010 Info-Marketing Bootcamp, we'll do everything possible to help you start a real, income-producing Internet business. We've enlisted experts in marketing and business building to teach you all they know... Experts like Noah St. John... Rich Schefren... Drayton Bird... Jennifer Stevens... and Brian Edmondson... Experts who actually use the secrets they teach, every day, to make money for themselves and others. But many of these experts may seem pretty removed from where you are now. They make millions, while you may be earning five figures. They have decades of experience, while you may be just starting out. They have already "made it," while you are still dreaming of what "making it" is like. That's why we were so pleased to get one of our "mystery" speakers on board for the ETR 2010 Info-Marketing Bootcamp. Now, this speaker may seem intimidating at first. After all, she's spent 25 years in the direct marketing and publishing industries. She's a best-selling author. She's headed up multi-million dollar companies. But she's got a special edge that none of our other presenters have... You see, she started her own business. From scratch. Just this year. Last year at this time, she was in the same boat you are. She had an idea. She had a passion. She wanted to venture out on her own. And she DID IT - with a start-up budget of just $10,000. Now, she has her own Internet business. A list of 10,000 readers. An impressive line-up of joint venture partners. And money coming in the door. (In fact, she's on track to break the $1 million dollar mark!) She is right in the eye of the entrepreneurial hurricane. Which means she knows not only exactly how you feel... She also knows how to turn that itch into a full-fledged business that brings in money TODAY. Of course, I'm talking about none other than MaryEllen Tribby, ETR's former Publisher and CEO. At Bootcamp this November, she promises to be straight with you about exactly what it takes to build and grow a business online today. She's not going to sugar coat anything. She's not going to leave one secret out. In fact, she hinted that she plans to disclose the single most important skill an entrepreneur (or any level of businessperson) can develop... It's not copywriting. It's not marketing. It's not business management. And NO ONE offers lessons on how to do it. But at Bootcamp, MaryEllen will "break the silence" and tell you everything you need to know about how to master this skill and use it to your own advantage. Put MaryEllen's secrets together with the high-level marketing and business ideas our other speakers will be revealing... And you'll have everything you need to build and grow your own money-making Internet business... and turn that not-quite-believable dream into reality. Come to Bootcamp in November. We'll make you a believer. Jason Holland

ETR: Making Money From BP's Problems

Issue No. 3075 - $1.00 | Tuesday, August 10, 2010 |
| -----------------------------------------------------Highly Recommended----------------------------------------------------- Now Is the Time to Act Not next year when "things are running smoothly." Not next month after you've "finished taking care of this or that." And not next week after you've "had a chance to check your calendar." The time to make a life-changing decision is always NOW! You know you want to get that cash flowing. You know you want to have a business of your own. And you know you want to experience the fun and excitement of being your own boss. Then don't put it off another minute. Act right now! "Successful investing is anticipating the anticipations of others." John Maynard Keynes Big Gains Ahead, Thanks to BPBy Bob Irish Personally, I'm sick of BP. I don't care if they survive. But I am interested in making money off of BP's problems. In the mainstream financial press, I've come across three ways to do it: Buy BP cheap... or short BP... or buy the Gulf clean-up companies. I don't like any of them. I have a much better -- and less obvious -- way for you to clean up on the Gulf. Here's one clue... BP is in talks to sell one of its valuable assets to China -- its 60% stake in Pan American Energy (PAE). It's not hard to see why BP has so much invested in PAE. PAE is Argentina's second-largest oil producer. It holds interest in 13 oil and gas production blocks in Argentina and in 10 active oil and gas production development blocks in Bolivia. PAE also holds interests in eight exploration blocks in Argentina and seven in Bolivia. The Chinese company that BP is talking to sees the opportunity in PAE. It already has a 20% stake in the company that it acquired earlier this year from Argentina's Bridas. But the Gulf disaster has made it possible for the Chinese company to get more of a good thing. If the deal with BP goes through, it would be bullish for its shares. Here's another clue... BP is talking to this same Chinese company about a stake it just bought in the South China Seas. If BP strikes oil in the South China Seas, it's required by Chinese law to hand over majority ownership to this Chinese company. Are you seeing a pattern here as to which company holds the upper hand? Actually, it's not just with BP. These days, this Chinese company has the upper hand with everybody. It's a company IDE's own Andrew Gordon recommended last July. Its name is CNOOC (China National Offshore Oil Co.), and it's now up over 30%! In the last six months alone, it's climbed over 15%. Other oil companies haven't done nearly as well. ExxonMobil and Brazil's Petrobras have lost 15% or more. Shell and Chevron, too, are in the loss column. Only ConocoPhillips shows a gain -- of 5% -- but it's two-thirds lower than CNOOC's. And Andy is still excited about the stock. I caught up with him at the Early to Rise offices last week and had a chance to ask him about the oil industry in general and CNOOC in particular... Bob: I take it you are still bullish on the energy sector, Andy. Why? Andy: Not across the board. But on oil, absolutely. You can make tons of money if you just know a couple of things. Bob: Like what? Andy: For one thing, you keep hearing that offshore oil production has no future because it's going to be regulated to death. That's simply not true. It's still gonna take off in places like Venezuela, Brazil, China, and Africa. Even Saudi Aramco will be jacking up offshore production. And forget the idea that oil got a permanent black eye from BP's accident. That's total B.S. Do you see anybody boycotting oil? The hybrids were being bought by people who hated oil already. BP's accident is having zero impact on oil demand. Bob: So how, exactly, have BP's problems helped CNOOC? Andy: BP's accident in the Gulf of Mexico is the best thing that ever happened to CNOOC. Crude production worldwide has basically flatlined since 2005, so future production has to come from offshore. And that's CNOOC's territory. Bob: Aren't other oil companies being just as aggressive as CNOOC? Andy: Are you kidding? CNOOC is the last of the big spenders. Last year, it spent 34% more on production drilling. Only three other oil majors spent more on production drilling, and CNOOC outdid them all. Bob: And the rest? Andy: They all cut back. And in the meantime, they're failing to replace the oil they bring up from the ground. CNOOC, on the other hand, is buying up offshore properties left and right. They've been particularly aggressive in Africa. Bob: How else has BP's accident helped CNOOC? Andy: It's going to mean stricter regulations and, thus, increase the cost of getting oil out of the sea. CNOOC already has a huge advantage there. It is the lowest-cost offshore producer in the world. It brings up oil from the sea for $20 a barrel! Bob: That's really cheap. Andy: CNOOC has said it needs oil to go for at least $30 a barrel to be profitable. With oil now in the mid-70s, the company's profit is north of 250%. CNOOC's cost advantage is going from big to GINORMOUS. Bob: Besides investing in CNOOC, is there any other way to make money off of BP? Andy: Well, there is -- and everybody is missing the boat on this one. Stricter regulations will rejigger the market. But the mainstream press is focusing only on how it will raise the cost of producing oil and, they claim that nobody benefits from that. What they fail to realize is that it'll create a fundamentally new equipment market for one part of the oil industry. As a result, a handful of companies will see their profits soar. I've picked the best of them for my readers in the next issue of Sound Profits. Bob: Thanks, Andy. Sounds like another winning pick for you. [Ed. Just click on the link to get all the details on this monthly financial newsletter from our colleagues at Investor's Daily Edge. "I have been to many seminars over the years, but this one topped them all. It was equivalent to earning a master's degree in Internet Marketing in 4 days. I refer to my Bootcamp notes every week, and continue to get great marketing ideas from them. We had no idea videos were so important in driving traffic to our website. We added videos to our website immediately after Bootcamp, and saw traffic increase significantly. We are now producing our own videos to go on YouTube and also on our website." -- Bob Rubenstein -----------------------------------------------------Highly Recommended----------------------------------------------------- Why You Don't Need to Be an Author to Have a Bestselling Book A Florida martial arts expert "found" a dusty old book. Then he turned it into estimated sales of over $20,000 in one month. With another book, he's pulled in over $332,250. A 30-something Internet marketer used the same formula to dig up his own bestseller. The little-known art book he found made $19,453 in just 3 weeks. These books weren't first editions. They weren't famous. They weren't wildly popular. Best of all? These hidden treasure troves don't have to cost you a penny. You could unearth the next bestseller. Find out how right here. Today's Words That Work: PanjandrumA Panjandrum (pan-JAN-drum) is a very important or influential (and often overbearing) person. The pseudo-Latin word was coined by Samuel Foote, an 18th-century English dramatist and actor. Example (as used by Max Byrd in a New York Times review of The Transformation of Bartholomew Fortuno by Ellen Bryson): "[P.T.] Barnum, in reality a great 19th-century panjandrum of hype, bangs his fists but makes little impression." ETR: A True Decision

Because if you reserve your seat today, you can take $200 off the regular price. And if you change your mind for any reason at all, any time up until October 1, we will give you every cent back. "Confront the dark parts of yourself, and work to banish them with illumination and forgiveness. Your willingness to wrestle with your demons will cause your angels to sing. Use the pain as fuel, as a reminder of your strength." August Wilson A True DecisionIn midstream, the fundraising speech I was giving for the Hospice Foundation got away from me. I paused and the room became slow-motion silent. The crowd of attendees, some with folded arms and some with legs crossed at the ankles, sat there, waiting for me to continue. My voice cracked as I said, "There's something you should know about me." I had to tell them. Without warning, the memory of four weary faces that I had seen the day before tugged at my heart and compelled me to talk about an experience I had never intended to share. Unplanned, on stage, I did it in Johannesburg. I was in South Africa for two speaking engagements. The first was the 2009 Global Speakers Summit in Cape Town. It was an honor to be listed on the program with some of the best from around the world. My "Healthy Speakers Are Wealthy Speakers" workshop had been a complete success, and my confidence was soaring. The applause from my international peers is a sound I will never forget. But I didn't understand the complexity of my gratitude until I flew into what they call "JoBerg"... I was comfortably reclined in the back seat of a black-on-black Mercedes Benz. We were headed to the Rosebank Hotel, which I had heard was "very, very nice." After about a mile, we came upon a level of poverty that was almost impossible to take in. Tin huts were scattered about, and it was obvious that many of the women, men, and children there slept outside. We stopped at a red light. Flashes of my own homelessness tore through me like lightning. Through the window of the sedan, I watched a woman, stooped on a curb, cook a stick of corn atop a fire made of paper and wood. Her three small children hovered anxiously above the piece of food. I connected to the scene as a secret survivor of a similar war. An intense fear of being hungry blew through me, and I realized how far I had come from the lowest point in my life. Here I was, 10 years later, a professional speaker. And I had never given a speech about the stale popcorn from trashcans or the abandoned van I lived in with strangers. It was too horrible to articulate. The light turned green, and we drove away. Several miles down the road, we pulled up to the Rosebank Hotel. The lobby was Africa meets Park Avenue chic, complete with an immaculate marble floor and oversized maroon velvet sofas. "Right this way Ms. Swan," said the concierge -- and the thoughts of my past cascaded away like clouds on a windy day. But the vision of that mother and her three children returned 20 minutes into my fundraising speech for the Hospice Foundation, overshadowing my carefully crafted health and wellness message. It was time to reveal that the Prada dress I was wearing bore no resemblance to the bloody jeans I wore when I entered rehab. It was time to reveal that my body was once a cesspool for self-hatred, depression, and drugs. It was time to say that even people with promise lose their way and end up living on the streets. So I pressed through the crack in my voice and began talking about those days. If you had been a fly on the dingy walls of my desperate, crumbling world back then, you would have quickly chosen to fly away and escape the swat of death that was creeping up behind you. I would have done the same, if I could. But five years of denial had melted my drive and my ability to feel danger approaching. Life just kept getting darker and I continued to close my eyes. I had exchanged Big Apple achievements for a pee-stained mattress 3,000 miles way. No more bylines in national magazines. No more 72nd and West End apartment or Central Park morning coffee. Sunrises were cruel punishments, because I now lived outside, waiting for death to come my way. I finally got my wish. I overdosed. I died. And there wasn't a white light -- only darker crushing darkness, until I bolted back to life. For hours, I struggled to lift my own dead weight, determined to make something of my second chance. I stumbled more than I stepped, and it didn't matter that I saw a little boy grab his mother's leg as I got closer. It didn't matter that there was blood on the seat of my pants or that there was dirt in my tangled hair. What mattered was that I'd had the courage to face the darkness within and make the decision to overcome that reality. Blaming and looking outward had nearly killed me. Taking responsibility and facing what was true for me set me free. As I talked to that crowd in Johannesburg, their arms unfolded. Their ankles uncrossed as ladies reached down for tissues to dry their tears. The unplanned words that poured through me connected us all. And when I was finished, they were standing on their feet and applauding. More than 30 people waited in line to tell me how my "unintended" speech encouraged them to face parts of themselves that they had kept conveniently hidden. After listening to my story, they were willing to make their own true decision to be free. When you make a true decision: You honor it regardless of whether other people support it. When I was given my second chance at life, I made the true decision to live courageously. What I realized in South Africa is that courage is contagious. Her miraculous journey from deprivation and despair to vibrancy and abundance lit a passion inside her that illuminates her work today. Assisting others in overcoming all self-defeating thinking and behavior is her life's purpose, and the results have been astounding. Elle Swan's Vibrant Living philosophy has been recognized multiple times on NBC and PBS, and she is currently the Vibrancy Coach for ABC Las Vegas. She is also the author of Your Mind Over Habits: A Woman's Guide to a Happy Life and a Vibrant Body. Visit Elle's website, www.elleswan.com, for more details. The Early to Rise team met Elle Swan at last year's Info-Marketing Bootcamp, the conference we hold every November. And we are already accepting signups for this year's event. As always, it will be at the Delray Beach Marriott, right across the street from the Atlantic Ocean (a great winter getaway). And, as we do every year, we've invited the top Internet marketing experts and business builders to help us "pull back the curtain" on how to create a life-changing Internet business. Find out how you can join them here.] -----------------------------------------------------Highly Recommended ----------------------------------------------------- Someone in China Wants to Make You Rich It's no secret that China exports billions and billions of dollars' worth of in-demand products to the USA (and other countries) every year. Who's doing all the importing? Well... you might think only "big corporations" are in on it. But one of the most experienced business experts we work with (he's launched more than 40 successful businesses over the past 28 years) has discovered a way for ANYONE... regardless of experience, education, or amount of start-up capital... to profit from Chinese imports. He'll show you where to find wholesalers and manufacturers in China who would LOVE to do business with you... ... and help you GET RICH. "You speak the truth." "Thanks, Mary Ellen. Success mentor Bob Cox discovered a secret... It's one that grew his income by 300%, helped him co-found a local start-up that grew into a $2-billion-a-year enterprise, and made it possible for him to retire (for the first time) at age 36. That same secret -- which Bob calls the "Hourglass Epiphany" -- could be your key to success. Get the full details on the "Hourglass Epiphany" -- and find out how to use it to create your own life of relaxed accomplishment -- right here. Today's Words That Work: ArticulateTo articulate (ar-TIK-yuh-late) -- from the Latin for "to divide into distinct parts" -- is to express clearly in words. Example (as used by Elle Swan today): "Here I was, 10 years later, a professional speaker. And I had never given a speech about the stale popcorn from trashcans or the abandoned van I lived in with strangers. It was too horrible to articulate." We want your feedback! Rewarding Yourself When I was first getting into the business of selling educational programs, a famous zero-down real estate guru asked me, "Do you know the thing people who take my courses want most?" I had a sneaking suspicion I was about to get it wrong, but I gamely answered, "To be successful real estate investors?" He laughed. "You've got a lot to learn, my friend." I took the bait. "So what do your customers want?" "They want to avoid taking action." I told him I wasn't sure I understood. He was kind enough to clarify. "Most of the people who take my courses and who will be buying your programs want to feel like they are on the road to success. But they don't want that road to end. They like the journey. They fear the destination." "And why would that be?" I asked. "To tell you the truth," he said. "I don't know. But I can tell you this. After our real estate students have gotten the knowledge they need to succeed, few of them get out there and get to work. Most of them just buy more programs. If they don't buy them from us, they will buy them from someone else. So we sell them extra programs." "That's sort of depressing," I said. "If you give one of my customers – someone who has completed his real estate education and is fully prepared to start investing profitably – a choice between actually getting to work and buying another course to learn more, he will buy the course." "Are they afraid of failing?" "Could be that," he said. "Could be they're afraid of success. As I said, I don't know." Since then I've thought a lot about this failure-to-get-started problem. I've read dozens of books and talked to many of my colleagues and posed the question to hundreds of my customers. The theories as to why people don't take action are many and varied. The three that make most sense to me are:
If these are the main reasons why so many people don't take action when they are ready, what is the solution? There's no mystery to that. Behavioral scientists know that the way to change a person's behavior is by motivating them through positive reinforcement. This is what B.F. Skinner had to say about it in A Brief Survey of Operant Behavior: "It has long been known that behavior is affected by its consequences. We reward and punish people, for example, so that they will behave in different ways. ... Operant reinforcement not only shapes the topography of behavior, it maintains it in strength long after an operant has been formed. Schedules of reinforcement are important in maintaining behavior. If a response has been reinforced for some time only once every five minutes, for example, the rat soon stops responding immediately after reinforcement but responds more and more rapidly as the time for the next reinforcement approaches. ... Reinforcers may be positive or negative. A positive reinforcer reinforces when it is presented; a negative reinforcer reinforces when it is withdrawn. Negative reinforcement is not punishment. Reinforcers always strengthen behavior; that is what 'reinforced' means." Positive reinforcement is a big part of my life. I reward myself constantly and for almost any sort of accomplishment, big and small. By attaching rewards to my desired behavior, I increase the likelihood that I will repeat that behavior in the future. When I "master planned" my life for the first time, I had to spend some time thinking about how to reward myself. I gave myself all sorts of incentives for all sorts of objectives. Some of them worked. Some of them didn't. Some success coaches suggest big rewards for big accomplishments. You might, for example, reward yourself with a sports car when you make your first million dollars. Big goals like that never worked for me, because they were too far off in the future. What motivates me are short-term goals. And I have a feeling that short-term goals will be better for you, too. Over the years, I developed a reward system that works very well for me. Here it is:
These rewards, as you can see, are pretty mundane. But that's the thing about rewards. They don't have to be big or even special. They need only be enjoyable. It would be easy for me to consider these little things – the stretching, the protein shake, reading a good book – as simply an ordinary part of my ordinary day. But by looking at them differently, by seeing them as pleasurable rewards for specific, desired behavior, they motivate me. I think that is the key – identifying little pleasures you already have in your life and using them as behavior-changing rewards. It's very easy to do once you recognize that these little pleasures are blessed gifts. Truly speaking, you are lucky to be able to enjoy them. Be happy about that. Use them pragmatically. [Ed. The book, to be published by John Wiley and Sons, won't be released until November. But you can get an early look. And sign up to get first chance at buying The Pledge. Just go here, give us your e-mail address (so we can give you exclusive book updates and a special deal when the book is officially released), and you'll download an excerpt from The Pledge instantly.] The Guillotine and Sandpaper I've been buying real estate for the last nine months because it's cheap. Steve Sjuggerud, whose instincts and research I trust, feels the same way as I do about this investment. In a recent Daily Wealth column, he said: "Around the office, we have a saying about how the bust of a bubble goes: 'First the guillotine, then the sandpaper.' (It's not our saying, actually. As far as I know, market legend Bob Farrell said it first.) The guillotine is the initial crash -- like the Nasdaq bust in 2000. The sandpaper is what follows -- like a decade of Nasdaq stocks grinding sideways, but going nowhere. He's right about the sandpaper. I would not advise buying real estate now unless it provides a substantially positive (i.e., more than 5%) return on a down payment of 20%. And that's 5% net of all costs. I'm getting that -- sometimes considerably more -- on the properties I'm buying. If you are interested in getting involved in real estate now -- and learning more about how I've done it to protect myself from inflation -- check out my essay in the May 2010 issue of the Liberty Street League newsletter. You can sign up for a trial subscription here. And when you do, you'll not only get instant access to the LSL archives (and that article)... you'll receive a free copy of my New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestseller on business building and entrepreneurship, Ready, Fire, Aim. Readers Respond I've gotten some great feedback from readers about my recent essay, "The Most Important Thing I Ever Learned About Health." Quite a few people have asked for further information about the book by Dr. Nortin M. Hadler that I mentioned in the essay. So here goes... The name of the book is Worried Sick: A Prescription for Health in an Overtreated America. It was published in 2008 by the University of North Carolina Press. Dr. Hadler, a UNC professor, is a powerful advocate for change. In the book, he sets his sights on separating genuine medical advice from marketing opportunism. Looking at screenings, diagnoses, drugs, and surgeries, he exposes an excessive and expensive industry, and finds its solutions to be ineffective. He's also written a follow-up book... the equally excellent Stabbed in the Back: Confronting Back Pain in an Overtreated Society. In this one, he gives a comprehensive overview of what he calls the "backache industry." He investigates why modern medicine has failed to properly address one of the most common and debilitating problems of our time... and finds a multibillion-dollar industry getting rich on it. Best of all, he backs up everything he says with real research and scientific evidence. Dr. Hadler tells it like it is... even though that may be tough to hear. I highly recommend both Stabbed in the Back and Worried Sick. Talking about back pain, I've also heard from lots of readers praising the free back-pain report given away by Natural Health Dossier. It really is a great report, and I'm glad it's been received so well. If you haven't yet checked it out, you can still claim your free copy here. Putting Things Into Perspective Whenever I find myself embroiled in a stupid argument or endeavor, I think about time. This is what I think: According to the best scientific measurements we have, time began 13.7 billion years ago. Hard to comprehend, isn't it? Maybe it will help if you think of it this way: If the Big Bang occurred on the first second of January 1 and today is the last second of December 31, then:

Your ETR Insider

| From The Desk of Laura Rodini | Volume 1 | Issue 25 | August 6, 2010 | |||||
Dear ETR Insider,
We just started sending out invitations to our November Info-Marketing Bootcamp, and our entire office is already counting down the days. This is the biggest event we hold all year. In fact, many people in the info-marketing business view this as our industry's "flagship" conference. That's because we bring in the world's best marketers - experts on list building, Google AdWords, video marketing, social media, product creation, and more - to share their secrets. You may have heard of some of them: Rich Schefren, Mike Koenigs, and Perry Marshall, to name just a few. (In the coming weeks, we'll be revealing a few surprise speakers, too.) So if you have an offline business but want to go online... or if you've started an online business but need a few pointers... even if you don't yet have a business but want to start one... Bootcamp is the place to be. And because a lot of "industry" people to come to Bootcamp, it's a great chance for you to form relationships and even do business deals. Our speakers are quite approachable. The bar in the lobby at the Marriott, for example, is a frequent meeting spot. (Check out Rob Gramer's story in the Bootcamp promotion. After one of the sessions, he bought one of our speakers a drink at the bar - and he got the tip he needed to get his business off the ground. No joke!) And it all happens in our beautiful hometown of Delray Beach, Florida. I asked our staff to film a few videos so we could tell you about some of what you'll get to learn at Bootcamp... and show you a little bit about the area we live and work in. Here's mine (with a cameo appearance by George):
And check out your invitation to Bootcamp! | The Natural Way to Beat Heart Disease |So what's the "true" cause of heart disease? Our Natural Health Dossier editor Ian Robinson says saturated fats and cholesterol have nothing to do with it. "Rather," he says, "it's about the internal flames that are burning up your cardiovascular system." Ian's latest report deconstructs the "cholesterol myth" and reveals a natural way to beat heart disease. He focuses on the work of one visionary doctor... a man who spent 25 years as a heart surgeon before realizing that the medical community was getting it all wrong. Over the course of a decade, this doctor then compiled enough first-hand research and patient success stories to prove his theories and make them scientific fact!
Getting - and taking advantage of this information - could be one of the best things you ever do for your heart. For all the details about Natural Health Dossier, just click here. | Head of the Class |
I want to introduce you to Nathan Langen, a 20-year-old college junior from Ontario, Canada. In the short month since our 5 Days in July Conference ended, Nathan has been enjoying life like every teenager should. He's playing in lacrosse championships during the day… But in his free time, he's been working on his website, http://www.sportsworkouts.com/. Nathan's using a 2-sidebar column format from WordPress that gives him room for his signup box, as well as a listing all of the sports he's going to feature. One of the articles he wrote for his website (about goalies) was featured on ezine.com. And he's been networking with another ETR reader, Paul Hobart, so he can add content to his website about golf. (Paul's got a great golf site. You should check it out: paulhobartgolf.com.) But what impresses me most about Nathan's site is the video he just put together that actually walks his visitors through it! You have to see this:
For the video, Nathan used a program called Camtasia that was recommended by Brian Edmondson at our 5 Days in July Conference. (There's a free trial version of the program that you can try out.) Since we first featured Nathan's website at the Conference, he's had 648 page views and nearly a dozen signups. "I am currently working on the golf, football, and baseball pages," Nathan told me. "I also plan on running a hockey goalie camp. I just need to formulate a pricing schedule." Great work, Nathan! Are you inspired? Well, you can build a website... just like Nathan did. For information on how to do it, take a look at our Perfect Home Business Program by clicking here. | Easy Rider |
One more thing before I sign off this week... When she's not in the office, Sharika, our customer service manager, loves to spend time on her white Kawasaki Ninja motocycle. In fact, she and her Dad just embarked on a week long road trip, which is taking them from their hometown of Cherry Hill, New Jersey to the National Bikers Roundup in Columbia, Missouri. They've stopped at some great little roadside diners, and even made some new friends along the way. "Five hours on the back roads of MO... Saw more farm land than ever....but it was cool," Sharika reported this morning." That's the way to spend your summer vacation! Until next week,
Sincerely, We want your feedback! Let us know your thoughts on today's issue. Email us at: AskETR@ETRFeedback.com | ||||||
