Your ETR Insider

Early To Rise Insider
From The Desk of Laura Rodini Volume 1  |  Issue 2   |  February 18, 2010

Dear Early to Rise Insider,

It was great to check my email and see how many people responded to the first issue of our Early to Rise Insider e-letter!

683 of you signed up for more information about our 5 Days in July conference. And when we reopen membership to our Internet Money Club, 231 folks will already be on the waiting list.

I also want to thank you for the positive feedback on our new e-letter. Here's a note I got from Dan Potvin:

"Great!!! is the first word that comes to mind. I am as usual impressed with the changes at ETR. Michael Masterson is a true genius as well as the rest of the crew at ETR. I am just beginning to write and found the pot of gold with ETR. The resources, the writing, are superb. PLEASE keep up the good work."

Thanks, Dan. Now let's get down to business!

Personal Mastery Over Your Life

There's a whole lot going on at ETR – from our conferences and the Liberty Street League newsletter to special offerings from our friends Dan Kennedy and MaryEllen Tribby.

But the product I'm most excited about right now is from Dr. Srikumar Rao.

Dr. Rao is one of the best-educated people I've ever worked with, holding degrees from St. Stephen's College, the Indian Institute of Management, and Columbia University.

And he's somehow managed to take 4,000 years of spiritual and philosophical teachings and make them useful for our day-to-day lives.

It's like self-help for smart people. And it's simply life-changing.

You may have read about Dr. Rao in The New York Times. He teaches a wildly popular seminar at Columbia's Business School – so popular,  in fact, that people who aren't even enrolled in the MBA program sign up to hear him speak!

Last year, ETR invited Dr. Rao down to Delray Beach to present a series of lectures. The result of his visit was a 6-volume audio course titled Personal Mastery Program: Discovering Passion and Purpose in Your Life and Work.

Here's a sampling of what Dr. Rao teaches in the program:

 • The unnerving truth about the life you are living and the wonderful, liberating consequences

 • How to find the "good" in difficult situations… like the loss of a job, the death of a loved one, or a serious illness

 • The one thing you really need to be happy (Hint: It doesn't involve money, love, a job, or fancy cars.)

 • How to transform a job you can't stand into something truly fulfilling – without changing bosses, getting a promotion, or earning more money

 • The single cause of ALL of the stress in your life – and how to eliminate it for good

I'm already halfway through the first lesson. If you've already taken Dr. Rao's course, I'd love to hear what you think about it.

Even better, if you have a question for Dr. Rao or think he can help you in some way, let me know. He will be hosting a teleconference soon – within the next few weeks – and he asked me to get as much input as possible from people who might be interested. The call will be free. I'll let you know as soon as I find out the date and time.

A Big Surprise From a "Boring" Utility

I'm not one to get excited over a utility company. Few people are.

So during our weekly call with our Sound Profits investment editors, I was surprised by how enthusiastic Editorial Contributor Andy Gordon was about one nuclear power company in particular.

Andy's a graduate of the London School of Economics, with 25 years of investing experience and six investment books to his name. So when he tells me something's going to be big, I listen. And I asked him to share the details with you, too:

You can read Andy's full article about this company in the new Sound Profits issue. It's hot off the presses! (We sent it to our subscribers today.)  Get your copy here.

Paid Search Tip #1

1.83 trillion. That's a conservative estimate of the number of ads that will appear on Google this year.

With the enormous size of the paid search advertising market, it's no wonder pay-per-click (PPC) advertising has been one of the best ways for Agora, our parent company, to directly market its products.

But for most people new to online marketing, the prospect of entering into a Google ad auction can be downright terrifying.  So I asked our Paid Search expert, Brian York, to share a few thoughts on how best to begin:

Hi Laura,

There are two extremely important pieces of information you need BEFORE setting up your Paid Search campaigns:

What do you want your prospect to do?  Before you set up your first campaign you must decide, "What action do I want a prospect to take?"  This could be to:
1) sign up for a free e-letter
2) buy a product or service
3) place a phone call
4) request more information.

You will be paying your hard-earned dollars to get people to click on your ad so you want to define your Conversion Goal.  Ultimately your Conversion Goal will play a big part in helping you analyze and optimize your campaigns.

Define success Define a budget for your test and your definition of success. For example: "I am willing to spend X number of dollars in the first week and I expect to get Y number of conversions." X / Y = CPA (Cost Per Acquisition).

CPA is a key concept in pay-per-click marketing.  It is, of course, most valuable when you know the return you will get on each acquisition.  A successful ongoing pay-per-click campaign is simply a balancing act between

1) How much did I spend to acquire a customer, and 2) how much is that customer worth to me?

With these two numbers in mind, you are ready to go through the footwork of campaign setup.  In short, pick a core business concept or idea and identify keyword phrases central to that concept. Write an ad compelling enough to get a prospect to click on it. Then build a landing page designed to convert that prospect into your customer.

Good luck!
–Brian

A Special Treat

The other day, Michael Masterson and I had the pleasure of speaking with Harvey Mackay, the bestselling author of the motivational book Swim With the Sharks Without Being Eaten Alive.

Harvey's a joy to talk to. You can tell that he really believes in what he writes about. He's sold more than 10 million books in his career, and is still going strong. (His next book is due out later this month.)

We're thrilled to have Harvey's exclusive permission to feature his columns exclusively in upcoming issues of Early to Rise. And for a sneak peek at one right now, you can click here.

Delray Beach Is for Lovers

One more thing before I sign off for this week...

On Sunday my boyfriend and I were having a lovely Valentine's Day dinner at our favorite Italian restaurant right by the ocean. I swear they got their recipe for tomato vodka sauce from Grandmom Rodini!

Well, I wasn't more than a few bites into my pasta when I heard someone call out my name. I turned around, and not three tables away from us was ETR's customer service representative, Nicole and her boyfriend!

It's a small town, Delray Beach is, and that's a wonderful thing. Good friends, good times.

Until next week,

Laura

Sincerely,                                                                                                          Love never looked so cute
